Part-Time Organizer

Position:

Texas American Federation of Teachers (AFT) is seeking reliable Part-Time Organizers. A Part-Time Organizer (PTO) provides and important function to assist growing a self-sustaining local union. Texas AFT local affiliates have implemented programs for many years to identify and to develop part-time organizers. The PTO will be the key person to implement a strategic organizing plan and work to meet expectations and goals outlined by the program’s coordinator in conjunction with local union leadership.

The PTO will report directly to the Texas AFT PTO Program Coordinator. Applicants should have a working knowledge of unions and a commitment to the labor movement.  Some organizing experience is a plus, but not a requirement.

Texas AFT has more than 66,000 members statewide and is the state affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers, with more than 1.7 million members. Texas AFT represents all non-administrative certified and classified public school employees in traditional public schools and some charter schools. We represent the interests of teachers, counselors, librarians, diagnosticians, custodians, food service workers, bus drivers, nurses, teaching assistants, clerical employees, and the other employees who work so hard to make our schools run. We also represent employees in universities, colleges, and community and junior colleges.  

Duties:      

Specific job duties include:

  • Coordinate with the Texas AFT PTO Program Coordinator on a daily and or weekly basis
  • Recruit new members and identify new union activists/leaders (build the capacity and density of the local union)
  • Share local union’s campaign messages in day-to-day organizing conversations
  • Conduct worksite and campus visits as well as off-campus recruitment events
  • Plan out a strategy for recruitment and organizing in consultation with program coordinator and keep a detailed calendar of organizing activities
  • Maintain a detailed record of organizing conversations (assessments) and provide regular reporting of organizing progress

Qualifications:  

Required knowledge and skills:

  • Have union leadership experience or have grassroots organizing experience
  • Be a team player and capable of planning team meetings and implementing plans
  • Have great time management skills and be an independent worker
  • Outgoing personality and experience facilitating conversations easily
  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Have reliable transportation
  • Have proficiency using Microsoft Excel, Word, Google Drive, ZOOM
  • Retired AFT members in good standing is preferred but not required for employment

Salary and Benefits:

  • Part-time employment (up to 25 hours per week depending on organizing assignment and campaign)
  • $20 per hour
  • Mileage reimbursement based on the IRS mileage rate
